NATIONAL EDUCATION POLICY-2020 (NEP)

NEP 2020

National Education Policy has been announced by the Narendra Modi government to bring remarkable changes n the field of education. To prepare the younger generation for the competitive world and to make them adopt the Indian language and culture in the education system, NEP has been brought in place. Dr Kasturirangan committee has prepared this policy after conducting a thorough study in the field of education for five years. In India, after 34 years, a comprehensive policy on education was brought to bring comprehensive changes in the system of education.

Karnataka was the first state to form a task force for the implementation of NEP in 2020. The task force headed by B Thimmegowda has submitted the detailed report and plan of action to bring legislative, academic, and administrative changes in the line with NEP.

The government has taken steps to implement this policy. A symposium was organised for getting feedback from all stakeholders in the field of higher education. The policy is aiming for the identification of research-intensive and teaching-intensive universities, autonomous colleges in each district, curriculum design for multi-entry, multi-exit courses. Karnataka will be the foremost state in implementing NEP in letter and spirit.

Key features of the NEP were to impart higher education in the mother tongue. Encourage the students to pursue multi-disciplinary courses, for example, a student who is studying physics can also take literature as one of the subjects. An engineering student can also opt for History as one of the subjects in the curriculum. Like literature, students can opt for mathematic subjects.

Students who discontinue education can continue their education wherever they left it. The policy also facilitates the students to get the certificates for the period of their studying.

In 2021-22, Karnataka became the 1st state in India to implement the NEP in higher education across  government institutions, universities, etc. Our Government is planning to complete the implementation of NEP (National Education Policy) 2020 in 10 years. All efforts are being made in this regard. We have begun the academic reforms. We are training all teaching and non-teaching staff in this direction.
"Karnataka has taken lead to establish itself as the 1st state in India to implement the visionary NEP 2020,"

Union Minister of Education, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Government of India.

In 2021-22, Karnataka became the 1st state in India to implement the NEP in higher education across  government institutions, universities, etc. Instead of a teachers-centric mode of education, NEP has emphasised on interactive mode of education and allows the students to analyse the problems in the classroom sessions. Along with taking degree certificates, it also aims to prepare students for getting jobs during their studies. Thus, the internship has been made mandatory for the students in each course. By doing so the gap between curriculum and industries will be reduced.
